What we build

A long-horizon portfolio in communications, materials, energy, and extreme-environment systems. Graphene, two-dimensional materials, and metamaterials are part of that work — not the whole of it. We focus on physical constraints that remain hard: zero-bandgap limits in graphene electronics, vacuum thermal radiation in space, microwave efficiency and multi-band operation, and the safety and energy-density demands of next-generation storage.

Advanced Electronics & Materials

Graphene field-effect transistors and related 2D-materials approaches for beyond-silicon electronics. GFET began with an experiment in Hsinchu Science & Technology Park and has evolved through a global effort to develop working models. Current work centers on atomic-scale channel experiments and integration challenges that remain central to advancing high-performance devices.

Solid-state and composite energy storage

Next-Generation Energy Storage

Solid-state and composite battery technologies focused on safety, energy density, and longevity. Work began in 2014 with thin-film graphene materials originally developed for thermal management and coatings. That effort progressed through liquid and ceramic composites into solid-state and aluminum–graphene structures under active development today.

Metamaterial antenna and communications hardware

Resilient Communications

Microwave systems and metamaterial antennas for multi-band, resilient connectivity. NGMA began in 2018 with reverse-engineering of MiFi hardware to support varied satellite bandwidths. The work has evolved into universal-receiver concepts and metamaterial antenna approaches aimed at improving efficiency, bandwidth, and operational flexibility across terrestrial and space domains.

Space Systems & Infrastructure

In 2020 we began asking how our materials work could serve long-duration habitation in space. That year the CEO and CTO met a team in Taipei on nanomaterial heat discharge — GPU power systems running hotter, built on our earlier graphene coatings for LEDs. We combined their roadmap with technology we already had. As SpaceX and commercial launch scaled, we redirected the same work from heat on silicon to radiative discharge in vacuum.

How we operate

CXI is a private, capital-backed organization committed to advancing technology and building tomorrow’s infrastructure today. We combine long-horizon capital with technical depth and high-agency execution. We build internally, and we bring companies onto the platform.

We operate from Florida and Texas with full-time teams across Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, and Thailand. We focus on building real capability — from materials and devices to systems that can be deployed. Partners, operators, and founders who want to join that work should write to us.

Origin

Founded in 2011 as a private equity firm by Zach Van Meter, focused on infrastructure and long-horizon development across energy, technology, and manufacturing. In 2020 a new organization was stood up to rebuild American manufacturing capability. In 2023 those efforts were brought together as CXI. The organization remains privately held and operator-led.

Platform

The current platforms rest on capabilities developed and acquired over more than a decade, including thin-film, nano-material, and energy-storage efforts that continue under active development. Work is conducted across laboratory and development environments in the United States and Asia, with multi-year internal programs that have progressed from materials experiments to device and system-level efforts. We also sponsor initiatives that align with the leadership team’s focus and expertise.

Leadership

The senior team brings deep operating experience across private markets, advanced technology platforms, and global semiconductor supply chains — including a CFO with a background as a Wall Street trader in the 1990s, a President who was among the early team at Palantir, and a CTO with a PhD in semiconductors whose career has centered on managing silicon supply chains.
